One of the insights I got from my version of “metta” meditation was an introspectively clear sense that “benevolence” and “malevolence” are basically two disjoint worldviews. You’re either in a benevolent state, wishing well to yourself and more-or-less-all others, or you’re in a malevolent state, wishing ill to yourself and more-or-less everyone.
