I'm torn on reading this because on the one hand this is definitely good advice that I specifically fail on and need to remember to dither less, but on the other hand all of my scary huge decisions this year genuinely have been hard decisions with large costs and benefits on both sides. I guess I got moral luck there, in a sense.
I think the case against dithering is strongest for decisions you "have to make" to “advance the plot”. I refer to these as 'lean into fate" decisions. I am less confident on decisions that fight the plot.
As a kindred activator-type personality, I believe we exist in the universe for the purpose of pushing people out of airplanes that they want to jump out of but are too afraid to do so. 😈
People who are prone to dithering will entirely gloss over your point that there are no countervailing conditions in their narrative and they're not actively seeking counterpoints. If they were truly in search of advice or opinions, they'd be asking questions that would lead to valid reasons not to, which always exist.
You have a parachute. You did the training. You got on the plane. What're you waiting for?
*shoves the next person out the airplane door*
Yes, Leeeroy Jenkiiiiiins is my spirit animal. Why do you ask? 🪂
What's interesting about your profile of the ditherer is the lack of *any* cons in their ledger. That's absence of evidence, not evidence of absence, and that's precisely what's holding them back. The negative, by being vague, feels potentially unbounded. The solution could be just do it. It could be bringing the nebulous cons to light and reasonably bounding them, and then just do it.
