Sarah, once you made the remark of wondering whether patriarchy is the root of all other evils. I have been thinking about it. It depends.

The question ultimately boils down to the question of ingroup threats and outgroup threats. Today, a very widespread way of thinking is that our problem is ingroup oppression. Ingroup largely means within-nation, or within-political-unit, also tribe, for example. Through most of history, people thought the biggest threat is the other nation or other tribe.

Patriarchy is the thing that inherently likes to own. I think it is the essence of ownership itself. It likes to own wealth, power, people, land, everything. There are like 200 writers contributing to mises.org and not a single woman because the idea of property ownership is just so obviously a dude thing.

However, precisely because of its owning nature, it provides protection from outgroup threats.

We don't like to be owned cattle, but the wolves in the woods might be an even worse deal.
