MEG has been done with SQUIDs (superconducting quantum interference devices) as well which are quite bulky due to the necessity of cryogenics to function. I am not in the know for these fields at all but I suspect that while OPM may have more utility for MEG now, if we get a room temperature superconductor that doesn't require bulky support equipment, SQUID could be the go-to sensor again.

Thanks for writing this! I’ve wanted to do a survey of existing tech we can use to read from the brain for a while, and this is a great starting point. Great post!
